Have you ever wondered, “Is that God… or just my own thoughts?” You're not alone. One of the biggest questions new believers have is this: How do I actually hear God's voice? The good news is, if you’ve said yes to Jesus, you already have what it takes to hear Him. God is not playing hide-and-seek with His voice. He wants to speak to you—clearly, personally, and often.
God Still Speaks
In John 10:27, Jesus said,
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
If you belong to Him, you can hear Him. That verse doesn’t say “some sheep” or “the pastors.” It says My sheep. That includes you.
The voice of God isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes we expect thunder or angels singing. But in 1 Kings 19:12, Elijah heard God in a “gentle whisper.” That same whisper can come to your spirit through a quiet impression, a verse that suddenly feels alive, or even a deep sense of peace.
How Does God Speak?
God speaks in many ways, but here are some of the most common:
Through the Bible – The Bible is the primary way God speaks. When you read it, ask the Holy Spirit to highlight what He wants you to see. A verse might suddenly “jump out” at you—that’s often His voice.
Through the Holy Spirit in your heart – As a believer, the Holy Spirit lives in you (Romans 8:14). He may guide you with thoughts, nudges, or a deep inner knowing. You might hear Him say something simple like “Call your friend” or “Don’t go there.”
Through peace or conviction – God often leads by peace. If you feel unsettled about something, pause and pray. On the flip side, a strong conviction or tug in your heart might be the Spirit prompting you to act.
Through others – God can speak through trusted people—a sermon, a friend’s encouragement, or even a Rhema article!
How to Tune In
Think of your heart like a radio. God is always broadcasting, but we have to tune in. That means making space to listen. Here’s how:
Spend time in the Word – Start each day with the Bible, even a few verses. Ask, “God, what are You saying to me today?”
Quiet your heart – Turn off distractions. Even five minutes of silence can help you tune in to what the Holy Spirit is saying.
Write it down – When you sense God speaking, jot it down in a journal. It helps you learn His voice over time.
Obey quickly – When you feel God leading you to do something (even small), obey. Obedience strengthens your ability to hear.
You’re Already Closer Than You Think
Hearing God isn’t just for “super-spiritual” people. It's for you. The more you seek Him, the more familiar His voice becomes. Like recognizing a loved one’s voice on the phone, over time you’ll know when it’s Him.
So take a deep breath. God is not distant or silent. He’s speaking. He loves to talk with His children—and that includes you.
Reflect and Respond
This week, try this: Before you go to bed, ask God one simple question—“God, is there anything You want to say to me?” Then pause and listen. Don’t rush. If something comes to mind, write it down. If not, that’s okay too. Keep asking. Keep listening. He’s faithful to speak.
And remember what Jesus promised:
“The sheep hear His voice... and He calls His own sheep by name.” (John 10:3)
You’re not just one of the crowd—He calls you by name.
